A 30th Anniversary Book for a Finnish Family Business

Liuskemestarit (Stonegroup Finland Ltd.) is a Finnish family-owned company specializing in natural stone quarrying, production, and expert services. To celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary, Kiven takana (Behind the Stone) was created as both an inspirational publication for natural stone architecture and a sales tool that tells the story of a pioneering Finnish family business.

The book is divided into three distinct sections, both editorially and visually. It begins with the company’s history, illustrated with striking black-and-white photographs by Markku Lähdesmäki taken at the slate quarry. The second section showcases the company’s natural stone products, while the third presents selected reference projects demonstrating the versatility and beauty of Finnish natural stone. The overall design relies on strong visual storytelling, allowing the material itself to take centre stage.

Every copy of the book is unique. During the finishing process, a small piece of genuine slate from the Orivesi quarry was carefully attached by hand to each cover, reflecting the individuality of natural stone—no two pieces are ever alike.

The white cover features a textured varnish that enhances both durability and a subtle pearlescent finish. A stone pattern, printed with spot UV over 5% black graphics, becomes visible only when light reflects from the surface. Staying true to its title, Behind the Stone appears on the back cover, while the publication details are placed inside the book.

The cover also features a die-cut opening with a matte black label and a gold foil ring, creating a premium frame for the hand-applied natural stone. This tactile element invites the reader to engage with the material through touch, reinforcing the book’s connection to its subject.
